An extract of her death certificate shows that she was born in West Virginia; there was no West Virginia in 1842. Her family appears to have been in Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1840; in 1850 they were in Boone County, Kentucky; in 1860 they were living in Bainbridge Township, Schuyler County, Illinois.

In some census records Susan's place of birth was recorded as Kentucky; in others it was shown as Virginia.

Daughter of Henry Vaughan and Jael Jones; Jael's given name is also found as Jailey (on a marriage record) and Jane (in the 1860 census)
