The son of the late Evan B. and Eleanor F. Gaines Flamer, he was born in Lynn, Mass.
He graduated from Lynn English High School in 1950, earned a Bachelor of Science from Chapman College in Orange, Calif., a Master of Science from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash., and a Doctorate of Philosophy in education from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1976 at the rank of master sergeant after 24 years of serving his country.
Before coming to FAMU, he served as provost for student affairs at Eastern Washington University and vice president for academic affairs at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in Media, Pa.
He was a member of Bethel AME Church and the Capital City Rotary Club, a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served on the board of directors of the FAMU Campus Ministry.
Other survivors include
a daughter, Gail E. Flamer of Seattle;
two sons, Keith R. Flamer of Chicago and Chad E. Flamer of Seattle;
a brother, Charles A. Flamer of Santa Clara;
a sister, Eleanor F. Jones of Livonia, Mich.;
three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by
a son, Shawn E. Flamer,
and two brothers, Dr. Evan B. Flamer Jr. and Robert E. Flamer.
The service will be at 2 p.m. EST Saturday at Bethel AME Church, with burial at Southside Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. EST Friday at the chapel of Strong & Jones Funeral Home (850-224-2139).
