Her mother wrote: "The 28th of November 1932 another little girl joined our happy family and we named her Mari Lou. She was born with long black hair which turned a chestnut brown and her big eyes quickly turned to dark brown. Like a little papoose she looked at first, but blossomed into a very attractive woman. She has been a loyal and dutiful daughter. Her calling in life seems to be in genealogy for she is very active in that work. At seventeen she married Jack Forbes Pope and they had two sons and two daughters but the marriage did not survive."
Mari Lou was the 5th of 8 children born to Oliver and Viola Bowen. She was much favored by her mother as she almost died as an infant by contracting an infectious diarrhea from tainted milk. Doctors had given up trying to save her, but the love and prayers of her parents along with the grace of God she survived.
When she lost her children because of the lack of financial support of their father, Mari Lou never gave up trying to get them all back. She followed them to Georgia and got work there to be near them. When she was able to at least get her boys back, she returned to Florida. Always remembering the girls she left behind.
Mari Lou contracted breast cancer in 1993 and died within about 6 months.
