In 1861, Jane Phillips married Napoleon Bonaparte Fuller, born in New York state, but living around Racine, WI at the start of the Civil War. He enlisted to serve and Jane went along. At that time, women could go, but stayed back from the lines of fighting. He was in Co. D 16th Wisconsin Infantry. During the Battle of Petersburg, VA the general had the women who came with their husbands serve as nurses. Jane learned many things about nursing, which was later a help. Her husband was wounded and died of gangrene. She was pregnant at the time and lost her baby. After his death, she later came to Michigan. She was visiting her sister Adeline in Vicksburg, MI when Daniel Hending came to see her. He had heard that a woman named Jane Fuller had some training in nursing. His mother Katherine was very ill with cancer and needed a nurse. She agreed to come and care for his mother. It is not certain if she went back that day with him. Katherine loved Jane so much that her only wish was that Jane and Daniel would be married before her death. They were married on March 11, 1866.
