Mertie was my step Dad's mother. These are the only pictures that Dad has of her. Dad said she died of lung cancer, although she didnt smoke, but the DC says different.
Cause of death - carcinoma of the colon.

Mrs. James Leftridge of Shelbina, a former Clarence resident, passed away Monday morning after being in ill health for several years.
She was born Mertie Lou Powell 67 years ago, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Powell of Benton county. The family moved to Clarence in 1906 and she was married to James Leftridge in February 1921. Mr. Leftridge preceded her seven years ago and son, James Monroe, died in infancy.
Survivors are two sons, Murel and Burl Leftridge of Shelbina; four grandchildren; three step-chidren, Adolphus Leftridge and Mrs. Virginia Baker of Lentner and Laverne Leftridge of Clarence; five step-grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar Powell and Orville Powell of Clarence and Ed Powell of New Sharon, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Edgar Dye of Lentner.
Last rites were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., from the Methodist church at Shelbina with burial following in Oak Ridge cemetery. Barkelew & Hawkins were in charge of arrangements.
