When Earl Henry Markel was born on January 25, 1927, in Ohio, his father, George, was 30 and his mother, Lydia, was 29. He suffered a horrible accident at the age of nine when he almost died from a car dragging his body for more than a block. Earl spent over 9 months in the hospital and slowly recovered. After WWII, he married his high school sweetheart. He had one son, Montgomery Raymond Markel, and one daughter, Judith Earlene Markel Cox with Margaret Helen Markel between 1947 and 1949. He died of a massive heart attack on February 6, 1971, in Delaware, Ohio, at the age of 44.
