Spc. Bert Edward Hoyer, age 23, of Ellsworth died on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in the service of his country, in Ba'Quba, Iraq.

Bert was born October 28, 1980, in Red Wing, Minn., the son of Larry and Peggy (Kline) Hoyer. He was a 1999 graduate of Ellsworth High School and entered the U.S. Army Reserve, 652nd Engineer Company, in 2001. At the time, he was enrolled at the Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minn., studying wild life management. While in the service of his country, Bert was promoted to the rank of Specialist Fourth Class and received the Army service medal and the Army Reserve component achievement medal. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing, music, theater and anything he could do for others, especially young people.

Bert was a very friendly, caring person, liked by all who knew him. He felt it was his duty and privilege to serve his country, and was ready to pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Bert was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Beldenville, Wis.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Peggy Hoyer of Ellsworth, Wis.; brother, Darryl (Teri) Hoyer of Lake City, Minn.; sister, Annie Hoyer of Ellsworth, Wis.; maternal grandmother, Florence Kline of Ellsworth, Wis.; paternal grandparents, John and Donna Hoyer of Minong, Wis.; paternal great-grandmother, Edith Johnson of Minong, Wis. He is further survived by aunts and uncles, cousins and a host of friends; the 652nd Engineer Company and families; VCC staff and crew.

Bert's grandfather, Charles "Bud" Kline and his uncles, Daniel Hoyer and Ira Smith, preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Bert will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the Ellsworth High School. Rev. John Sutherland will officiate. Burial will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, Beldenville, Wis.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and for one hour prior to the service on Thursday, all at the high school.

Military rites and casket bearers will be provided by the 397th Engineer Battalion, Eau Claire Reserve Center, Eau Claire, Wis.
