Wisconsin Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the law department of Valparaiso University Indiana, in 1896, was admitted to the bar in 1896 and commenced to practice law in Boscobel, Wisconsin, in 1897. He was a member of the Grant County Board of Supervisors, (1901-04), Mayor of Boscobel, (1901-04, 06-07), a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, (1909-13) and Wisconsin State Attorney General, (1919-21). In 1921, he was elected as a Republican the 24th Governor of Wisconsin, serving until 1927. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1927-33). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation from 1933, until his death from pneumonia at age 58.
