Max was worked as a civilian employee at the Pentagon, dealing with veteran issues. He was working for that service on September 11, 2001 when Flight 77 was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon by Islamic terrorists. He was a retired United States Army Master Sergeant, serving from November 1, 1954 to November 1, 1974. He was officially the last American combat soldier to leave Vietnam in 1973.

His name can be found on the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
