Mathias was a Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio's 18th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1837 to 1839. A native of Pennsylvania, he served in the War of 1812. He continued his profession as a farmer after moving to Ohio, and also became a justice of the peace. He entered politics and became a member of the Ohio State Legislature and the Ohio State Senate. He was elected to Congress in 1836, served one term, and declined to become a candidate in 1838.
