Ernest, known as Lyle or Skipjack, was the husband of Harriet Diehl and the father of Chuck, Ernie and Charlene.

OBITUARY
NEW BOSTON, Ill. - Ernest Lyle Coulter Sr. 'Skipjack', 74, New Boston, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his home.

Services are at the New Boston United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Bishop will officiate. Burial will be at the New Boston Cemetery with military services conducted by the New Boston American Legion Post No. 48 and the Mercer County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1571.

Visitation is at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, Ill. Memorials may be made to New Boston United Methodist Church or the New Boston Cemetery.

Mr. Coulter was born on Sept. 9, 1928, in Eliza, Ill., the son of Ernest S. and Mina (Smith) Coulter. He married Harriett Jane Diehl on April 16, 1952, in Aledo. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2002.

He attended local Eliza schools.

He was a heavy equipment operator for the Corps of Engineers, Midwest Engineering and Valley Construction, retiring in 1980.

He was an U.S. Army Airborne veteran. He was a member of the New Boston American Legion Post No. 48 and the New Boston Masonic Lodge No. 59.

He loved fishing, hunting and woodworking.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene King and her husband, James, of New Boston; two sons, Charles Ernest Coulter and his wife, Janice, and Ernest Lyle Coulter Jr. and his wife, Julie, all of New Boston; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Lela Terrill of Aledo; and a half brother, Leo Mead of New Boston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
