On October 21st, 1942, a B-17 carrying World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker, Hans Adamson, and six others on a secret mission for the War Department ditched in the South Pacific. Colonel Adamson, Rickenbacker, and five others were eventually rescued after spending three weeks adrift in three life rafts. The eighth passenger died of exposure and was buried at sea.
