Giacomo della Chiesa, future Pope Benedict XV, was ordained in the same ceremony. Faculty member of the Roman College between 1879 and 1891, he adscribed among the advocates of the Sacred Congregations on March 24, 1889. Appointed substitute of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary on December 30, 1891, and Auditor of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Religious on December 24, 1896, he was named privy chamberlain supra numerum on February 9, 1897, canon of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica in 1903, domestic prelate of His Holiness on October 8, 1903, protonotary apostolic 'ad instar participantium' on the following November 5, and canon of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica on July 27, 1904. Appointed undersecretary of the Sacred Congregation for Bishops and Religious on June 3, 1907, regent of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary on February 9, 1908 and auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota that same month, he was named secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Council on December 7, 1911. At sixty years of age, Monsignor Giorgi was created cardinal deacon in the consistory of December 4, 1916 by Pope Benedict XV, receiving the deaconry of Santa Maria in Cosmedin three days later. Opting for the order of cardinal priests, his deaconry was elevated pro illa vice to title on May 25, 1923. Named major penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary on March 12, 1918, he was elected archbishop of the titular see of Ancira on April 26, 1924, receiving his episcopal consecration the next day at the Sistine Chapel inside the Vatican from Pope Pius XI. Resigning the titular see after his consecration, he was assigned as Papal legate for the consecration of two churches in the Holy Land on April 8, 1924. Passing away of pneumonia at his residence in the Palazzo Altemps of Rome, after wake and funeral mass were held at the church of Sant'Agostino, Rome, his body was transferred to Valmontone, where interment was held at the collegiate church of the Assumption next to the baptismal font, having been the conservator of this collegiate. The state school "Istituto Comprensivo Cardinale Oreste Giorgi" of Valmontone is named after him.
