Paul W. Gaffaney, 89, long-time family man, businessman and avid golfer died Monday, June 11, due to complications from congestive heart failure and cancer. He died at his home in Sun Lakes, Arizona.
Paul Gaffaney was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Fargo; the third son and third of five children born to James Edward (J.E.) Gaffaney and Ruth Ridley Gaffaney.
Paul graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1936. He attended Dakota Business College for two years before heading west to Santa Monica, Calif., where he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles prior to his U.S. Army service during World War II. For the latter, he was a radio transmitter/operator stationed in Korea.
He married May Gibson, the first love of his life, on Oct. 3, 1942. They returned to Fargo in 1947 so he could join his father and brothers in the family office supply business known as Gaffaney's Office Specialties, Inc. In 1949, his father asked him to open a branch store in Williston, which was the primary site of his work history until his retirement in 1977, when he moved with his wife, May, to Sun Lakes, Arizona. May died in 1988. It was in Williston that they raised their three children and Paul was active in the Elks Club, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, Williston Country Club, and served on the city commission.
In 1992, he met and married the second love of his life, Marjorie Ford. They resided in Sun Lakes where they have been socially very active in the community.
Those who knew him will remember his quick wit, sense of adventure, his interest in hunting, bridge, and gin rummy, and his great love of golf. On April 1, 2006, he was designated as a member of the Legends Club of the Cottonwood Men's Golf Association in Sun Lakes. Above all, Paul will be remembered for this undying loyalty, love and devotion to his family and to his friends.
Paul is survived by his three children, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
