Public Offices ill Several Months
OAKLAND, Sept, 26.—Giles H. Gray, pioneer of California, prominent attorney of this city and San Francisco, former public official, is dead at his home, 758 Tenth street, at the age of 78 years. He had been ill several months.
Gray was a native of New York city and was graduated from the College of the City of New York with its first class in 1853. He came to California immediately after graduation and was admitted to the bar of this state in 1856. Gray was one of the founders of old Lone Mountain cemetery of San Francisco. He was a member of the vigi lantes of 1856, served as a member of the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1863 and of the San Francisco board of education in 1864. In 1871 he was a member of the state legislature and in 1873 was surveyor of the port at San Francisco.
Gray moved to Oakland in 1871. He served as school director here for a time and was one of the leaders in the political movement known as the municipal league. Gray was also active in church and philanthropic affairs, having been president of the Men's league of the First Congregational church, the Associated Charities, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the board of trustees of Mills college. He leaves a widow, Marianna W. Gray, and a daughter. He was a brother of George D. Gray and Mrs. Cyrus S. Wright. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Gray residence.
