Admitted to California bar, 1897, and began practice at San Francisco. Assistant city attorney, San Francisco, 1908-1913. Judge Superior Court, California, 1913-1915. Private practice, 1916-1917. General counsel California Industrial Accident Commission, 1919-1923. Member United States Board of Tax Appeals, Washington, District of Columbia, 1924-1926.

Member faculty of Hastings College of Law, University of California, 1931-1947.

His father collected a pension from the U.S. Navy.
