In 1875 on her return trip from the East Mrs. Mary Hopkins wife of Mark Hopkins the railroad builder and patron of the arts, brought her niece Miss Mary Kellogg Crittenden to CA. In 1882 she married Timothy Nolan Hopkins adopted son of Mark and Mary Hopkins. As a wedding gift to her niece and adopted son, Mrs. Mary Hopkins built "Sherwood Hall" on the large Menlo Park estate. They lived there until the earthquake of 1906. The huge, three story frame building, frosted with gingerbread in the manner of the its day, suffered slight damage, but has never since been occupied. The Hopkins family moved into "The Lodge," alternating between that home and another in San Francisco, until the death of Timothy Hopkins.
