ALLEGED ATTEMPT AT HOLD-UP

Last night there was an alleged attempted hold-up on Commercial street in front of the old Natatorium. The alleged attempt was made on Theodore Conley, who lives at 10 Neosho street. Frank Ray a colored man is under arrest charged with the attempt.

Conley was on his way home about 11 o'clock when Ray stopped him in front of the Natatorium and stuck his hand in one of Conley's trouser pockets. Just then a person who had been standing near witnessing the performance and whom Conley took to be a pal of the highwayman approached and forcibly pulled Ray's hand out of Conley's pocket. Conley's rescuer turned out to be George Hornbarger. In the scuffle Conley's pocket was torn open. He had money in the pocket which Ray had attempted to search, but none of it was taken. Conley knew his assailant and made a complaint against him last night. Ray was arrested by Sheriff Newlin this morning. Conley thinks Ray intended a highway robbery, but in the dark made the mistake of committing it on an acquaintance. Ray is an ex-convict. He served five years in the penitentiary for breaking into a barber shop in Abilene.
