He was born February 7, 1922, to Henry and Olga Jensen Hansen in Newton, Utah. He was raised in Newton, graduated from North Cache High School and attended Utah State Agricultural College on a football scholarship and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1945. He married Gayle Reese on September 9, 1941 to whom he is sealed in eternal covenant. His beloved Gayle passed away in September of 1999. He later married LaGene Griffin.
Howard's professional life was with Union Pacific Railroad in Cache Junction and Salt Lake City, Utah and in Omaha, Nebraska. He retired in 1983 as Executive Vice President of Upland Industries, the real estate holding subsidiary of Union Pacific.
Howard was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He devoted his life in the support of his children and grandchildren. He was a leader of men and boys as an avid Scouter throughout his life and as a coach of church and community basketball teams for many years. He served as a Bishop and in many other leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He and LaGene served as missionaries in the St. George Temple Visitors Center Mission from August 2001 to August 2002. His life is a remarkable example of devotion, loyalty, faith, and steadfastness.
He is survived by his widow, LaGene, of St. George, and five children: H. Reese (Kathryn) Hansen of Provo, Utah; Dr. Val R. (Nita) Hansen of Farmington, Utah; Lana (Patrick) Clarke and AnnaLou (Robert) Fredericks of Omaha, Nebraska; and Jane Lassetter of Provo, Utah. He has 23 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 So. Bluff Street, St. George, Utah, from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday evening April 5th, and Friday morning April 6th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Green Valley Stake Center. Funeral services will be conducted in the Green Valley Stake Center, 511 S. Valley View Drive in St. George, at 11 am on Friday morning April 6th. A graveside service will be conducted in the Logan City Cemetery 1200 East 1000 North, Logan, UT on Saturday April 7th at 1 pm
