There is little to say about John, except that he strove for honor and achieved it. He never achieved the fame of his father, but he achieved success in his own right. John became famous as a chess player. He was married three times. 1. Juliette Trietz, 1880-1921, daughter of Nicholas Trietz and Marie Mansion. John and Juliette were childless. 2. Lydia Cromwell Sewell, 1898-1929, daughter of Edgar Henderson Sewell and Elizabeth Anne Shackelford. John and Lydia had a daughter. 3. Margaret Fitter, 1897-1987. John and Margaret had a son.

From The Morning Herald (Lexington, Kentucky) Sunday July 17, 1898 page 2 "Description of the Destruction of Cervera's Fleet Told by Cadet Beckner, of Winchester, Who Was on the Iowa." Is a letter from John Taliaferro Beckner on the U.S. Navy ship U.S.S. Iowa to his brother Lucien Beckner describing the naval engagement at Santiago harbor in Cuba on July 3, 1898. This would make him a veteran of the Spanish-American War.
