Nehemiah was the fourth child of William and Sarah (White) Andrews. William and Sarah established a farm in New Hartford, Litchfield, CT shortly after Nehemiah's birth. Nehemiah married first Phebe Benham on 30 Oct 1765. They had seven children: Nehemiah Jr., Jared, Dennison, Elizabeth, Norman, Phebe and Ira. He married second Sarah Goodwin (Phebe's niece) about 1783. They had seven children: Jonathan, Chester, Allen, Asa, Phoebe, a son who died as an infant, and Isaac.

Nehemiah and his brother Eli were members of Captain Hutchen's Company of the 18th Regiment, Connecticut Militia during the American Revolution.Nehemiah was probably just a private and reportedly served as a teamster. Captains Hutchins' Company marched to New York arriving 18 August 1776 and departed on 25 September 1776. This was a vital resupply mission for the Patriot forces under General Washington's command in Manhattan.

William Andrews, Nehemiah's father, signed his will with the "Andrus" spelling. Nehemiah also signed his will "Andrus." This spelling was used extensively during the period of the late 1700s and early 1800s. Often this spelling was the choice of a pastor or lawyer. Nehemiah Jr. used Andrews and Andruss. Jared, Denison and Ira used Andruss exclusively. The remainder of Nehemiah's sons appear to have retained the traditional "Andrews" spelling.

Nehemiah's grave has not been found but is likely located in the Old Town Hill Cemetery.
