NEW CASTLE MAN DIES IN ACTION
Sgt. Stephen Starkey, USA, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Starkey, New Castle, has been reported killed in action in France on July 13, according to word received from the war department.

A native of New London, Conn., Sergeant Starkey was graduated from Portsmouth high school in 1940 and was majoring in journalism at the University of New Hampshire when he left to enter the service in October, 1942.

He received basic training in Georgia and was attached to an infantry unit which went overseas in May. He was an only child. His father is a marine engineer at the navy yarrd.
