US Senator. Following service as a Major in the US Army during World War II, he was a practicing attorney in Colorado. He served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1965 to 1968. Elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 1972, opposing the Vietnam War, Haskell defeated the incumbent Senator Gordon L. Allott and served in that body from 1973 to 1979, when he was defeated for re-election. He then worked as a lobbyist in Washington, DC. Haskell was married to National Public Radio journalist Nina Totenberg.
