A wholesale grocer and merchant before then outbreak of the Civil War, when the conflict started he offered his services to the Union, and eventually put his skills as a merchant to good use. Initially enlisted in the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant, and made the regiment's quartermaster. His skills at managing and secure supplies for his men were noticed by superiors, and he was transferred to the Union Army Commissary of Subsistence Department, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. From that department he was assigned to three successive commands - the Army of Western Virginia, the Army of the Ohio, and the XVIII Army Corps, as their respective Chief Commissary of Subsistence. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services in the Subsistence and Provost Marshal General's Departments during the war".
