Betty M. (Fry) Wakefield, of Hanover, passed away March 30, 2012. She was the wife of the late Eugene C. Wakefield to whom she was married for 60 years.

Born September 29, 1926, in York, a daughter of the late Herbert F. and Effie M. (Lightner) Fry.

She was a 1944 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and a 1964 graduate of nursing school in Lancaster.

Mrs. Wakefield retired as the nursing supervisor from Greiman's Convalescent Home after 46 years of service.

She had been a Brownie leader; secretary of Good Sam's Camping Club; was the first woman president of Old Stonehenge Camp Ground; and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included reading, knitting and camping, and most importantly, spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wakefield is survived by two daughters, Sandra J. DeLong and her companion, Robin Ruth of Thomasville, and Patricia A. Zinn of Hanover; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Fry of York and Robert Fry of Montana; and five sisters, Frances Hoffmaster, Mary Wise, Thelma Druck, Janet Hickman, and Barbara Bowman, all of York. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson; three brothers; and one sister.

A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 10 a.m., April 2, 2012, at Heffner Funeral Chapel, York. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
