Born "over-yonder" (her signature phrase) in Davidson county, NC on February 20, 1905 as the third of five children of Charlie and Nevada Idol (maiden name, Payne). Raised in the Piedmont Triad metropolitan region of North Carolina — primarily the High Point area. As an adult, also lived in Tampa, FL, Atlanta, GA, and the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Married William Nelson McElveen Jr. (b. 1903 in Mayesville, SC) on November 23, 1927. The couple had three children: Louise, Charles William ("Charlie"), and Elizabeth ("Betty").

Served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and also owned and operated several High's dairy stores in Prince George's county Maryland during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. She kept a spotless home, had a "green thumb" (with roses and tulips being her gardening specialties), and was a FANTASTIC cook. Everything she prepared was certainly tasty, but her pan-fried chicken, liver & onions, homemade vanilla ice cream, and banana cream cake were especially delicious.

Was a devout Baptist (Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church in 4th photo) all her life and a Christian in the true sense of the word. Was a kind, generous, and warm-hearted soul who would almost literally give you the shirt off her back if she thought you needed it. Sadly, was preceded in death by two of her children, Louise and Charlie. She is remembered fondly by all those who were fortunate enough to get to know her.
