BERNICE P. ALCOCK GRAY was born on May 14, 1922, in South Bend, IN, to Essie (Delling) Alcock and Samuel Alcock, formerly of Michigan. Bernice attended college at South Bend College of Commerce in secretarial studies. Her parents bought a retirement home in Millington and vacationed there. She met the love of her life who lived around the corner, and married LD Gray in June of 1946 at the Methodist parsonage. They made their home in Millington, where they had and raised their daughter, farmed, and worked additional jobs. Bernice worked as a cashier in the school cafeterias, and later at Cobb's Dry Goods department, and was an election inspector. She was active in the Millington Garden Club, Millington Band Parents, Millington United Methodist Women, a member of the Millington/Arbela Historical Society, Millington United Methodist Church, and worked with Millington Needy Families for over 65 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Essie and Samuel Alcock, sister, Ellen (and Bud) Keller, brother, Ralph (and Esther) Alcock, her in-laws, Marie and Roy Gray, sisters- and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Randel Yale, Rama and Leon Pugh, JD and Maxine Gray, several nieces and nephews, son-in-law, Gilbert Trato, and her beloved husband of 23 years, LD Gray.
She is survived by her daughter Sharon Gray Trato; grandchildren: Jason (Melissa) Trato, Kimberly (Kevin) Blackmer, Eric (Ashleigh) Trato, and Tammie (Chad) Reinert; great-grandchildren: Kenzie Trato, Konner Blackmer, Keyton Trato, Kamryn Blackmer, Bristol Trato, Brason Trato, Watson Reinert, Graham Trato, and Averie Trato, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 17, at Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington. The service will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at Millington United Methodist Church, 9020 State Road. Remembrances may be directed to Millington United Methodist Church, Millington Needy Families, or Millington/Arbela Historical Society.
