Well Known Man Is Dead
Judge Reese Crawford Died Here Tuesday Morning - Funeral Today.
~Another of Columbus' most highly esteemed citizens, Judge Reese Crawford, aged 65 years has passed on to the great beyond.
~He died yesterday morning at 7:30 after an illness of several weeks of several complications, in the city hospital, where he was taken recently from the hotel where he has been staying during the absence of his wife.
~Judge Crawford was 63 years old. During his life he took a very active part in the social and political affairs of the city of Columbus. He was a member of the legislature from Muscogee county and served in various other official positions, until the time of his retirement several years ago. ~He is well known, not only in Georgia, but neighboring states, and his friends and acquaintances are numerous.
~Judge Crawford graduated from the University of Georgia and came immediately to Columbus where he entered the firm of Ingram and Crawford, as a junior member, he remained with that firm for several years, and during that time was elected to membership in the house of representatives of this county, serving in that capacity during the years 1878-79.
~After returning to Columbus, and after the disolution of the firm Ingram and Crawford, he became a member of the firm of McNeill & Crawford.
~During his career he was twice elected city recorder of Columbus, serving acceptable each time. He was also city attorney for a while.
~Columbus was his birthplace. He was the son of the late Judge Martin J. Crawford, whose Career stands out prominently among the names of Georgia's early settlers, who contributed greatly to the upbuilding of the state and its government.
~His wife, at the time of his death, was in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where he had gone a few weeks previous to her husband's illness, on a visit to her son, Mr. Henry B. Crawford, former superintendent of the Columbus division of the Central of Georgia railroad. Mr. B. H. Crawford left Columbus two years ago.
~Judge Crawford is survived by his wife and son in the immediate family, and one brother, Mr. Toombs Crawford, who is in New Orleans, La. His nephew, Mr. W. H. Crawford is proprietor of the Racine hotel. He has one or two other distant relatives in the city. His friends are innumerable.
~The funeral will be held from the residence of Mr. Frank G. Lumpkin, 1300 Third avenue, this morning at 11 o'clock. Dr. S. A. Wragg officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Linnwood cemetery.
~The following gentlemen are requested to act as pallbearers: Messrs. C. B. Grimes, C.A. Lovelace, D. A. Andrews, C.J. Swift, Robert E. Carter, H.R. Goetchius, Dr. W. W. Stewart, and J. Henry Chambers.
