Col. Farr was a Civil War veteran and financier. His wife Mary was the first osteopathic physician in Pierre. Together they built their mansion with plans to eventually turn it into a sanitarium, though that never happened.

Col. Farr was later appointed head of the State Soldiers Home in Hot Springs, SD. The mansion was rented to Governor Peter Norbeck.
