She was born Alta Maude Piper on Dec. 22, 1894, to George and Mary (Smith) Piper in Hurley, S.D., graduating from Hurley High School in 1916. She attended Normal School Training and taught in one-room schools for the 1916 and 1917 school years. Alta was united in marriage to Henry Lee Andrews on Feb. 28, 1917, in Hurley. She moved to rural Onamia, Minn., in 1923 with her husband and two sons. She led an active life in the community for 25 years as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Ferndale 4-H Club leader, active in South Harbor Farmer's Club, Onamia Grange and Onamia Methodist Church. She served as the South Onamia Community correspondent for both the Isle Messenger and Mille Lacs County Times in the '30s and '40s. She moved to California in 1948, living in Riverside and Grass Valley. She returned to Minnesota in 1949, living in Floodwood, Duluth, Zim and Virginia.
Alta spent 20 months in Bolivia in 1966 and 1967, with her missionary son, Bob, and family. She spent her final years in a nursing home in Virginia Regional Medical Center. Alta was a loving person, deeply involved with her family and others. After her family was raised, she and Lee cared for 16 foster children. She will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings; her husband, Lee, on May 2, 1961; and a daughter-in-law, Linda on, Jan. 3, 2000.
Alta is survived by a brother, Max (Wauna) Piper; sons Harold (Inez), Budd (Marguerite), Minn., Paul and Robert (Joyce); 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Floodwood.
