DR. H. B. KNIGHT DIES IN PUEBLO

One of the Original Trustees and Long Connected With Parsons College

Dr. Hervey B. Knight, one of the original trustees of Parsons college and for years financial agent and member of the faculty, died Friday in Pueblo, Colo. He had been in feeble health for some time.

The body will be brought here for burial, arriving Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in Barhydt chapel Thursday afternoon at 2 oclock, and will be largely in charge of the college.

Dr. Knight leaves a widow, and three sons - Harry Knight of Pueblo, James of Honolulu and Major Willis Knight of Ft. Leavenworth. The body will be accompanied by Harry Knight, but Mrs. Knight, who is 82 years old, will not be able to make the journey.

Dr. Knight was born in Ohio and received his education at Washington and Jefferson university and at Allegheny Theological seminary. He came to Ottumwa in 1869 as the pastor of the First Presbyterian church. When the organization of Parsons college became a vital project, he was much interested and was one of the twenty-five trustees to attend the first meeting. Without severing his connection with the Ottumwa church he became financial agent to the college in 1879 and in 1880 moved to Fairfield and devoted all his time to the institution, as financial agent and a member of the faculty. He continued in various chairs on the faculty until 1888 when he went to Marietta (Ohio) college as a member of the faculty, remaining there six years. He returned to Parsons as financial agent in 1899 and remained until 1902 when he went to Tacoma, Wash., moving from there to Pueblo where he has lived for about fifteen years.

KNIGHT FUNERAL FIRST IN CHAPEL

Rites For Old Trustee Appropriately Held There Yesterday Afternoon

The funeral of Dr. Hervey B. Knight, one of the original trustees of Parsons college, held there yesterday afternoon, was the first that ever took place in the building in the fourteen years of its existence. His body rested amid the flowers in the quiet hush of that sanctuary while the college, which he did so much for in its struggling years, paid appropriate tribute to him.

The services were conducted by Dr. W. E. Parsons, who followed him here as trustee, and who had worked with him in previous labors, and who spoke with deep feeling as he reviewed the life of the dead man and gave him his mead of praise. Dr. Parsons was assisted by Dr. H. Sears Thomson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Ottumwa of which Dr. Knight was the second pastor, back in 1869.

The services opened at 3 oclock with a pipe organ number by Mrs. Mildred Stewart Keesey, and Dr. Parsons delivered a brief prayer. A double quartet, made up of Dean McKee, Margaret Lyon, Max Guyer, Glenna Lewis, Marie Linquist, Margaret Anna Pogue and Jack Ferren, college students, sang several numbers among them being "Crossing the Bar," and "Jerusalem the Blessed." Dr. Thomson read the scriptures, and Dr. Parsons followed with a feeling sermon on "Mark the Perfect Man."

The active pallbearers were: Professors Otto F. Frederikson,, Hobart Collins, Bryron D. Roberts, George C. Wise, Harold T. Smith and Fred M. Hinkhouse. The honorary pall bearers were: Col. W. G. Heaton, W. G. Ross, Dr. Howard McDonald, P. S. Junkin, J. C. Thorne and R. J. Wilson.

A large number of Ottumwa people attended the services, among them being: Dr. H. Sears Thomson, Mr. and Mrs. Hervey L. Pollard, Mrs. Harriet Pollard, Mrs. F. B. Cresswell, Mrs. E. A. Kent, Mrs. George A. Warden, Mrs. T. George McElroy, Mrs. Fannie Merill, C. E. Daniel, T. B. Trotter, D. A. Emery, Edwin Duncan, Fred W. Wilson, Miss Mary Moore, Mrs. A. L. Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. Chase Bannister.

Mrs. Knight, the widow, was unable to attend the funeral because of her age, but Harry Knight, a son, accompanied the body here from the home in Pueblo, Colo., and Major Willis Knight was here from Ft. Leavenworth.
