Melvin F. "Mel" Anthony, 81, of 1331 Oak Park Place, formerly of 9576 Monticello Drive, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at noon Saturday, March 31, at St. Joseph Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home until time of services.

He was born on May 20, 1930, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of Charles and Josephine (Nauman) Anthony. He married Geraldine Johnson on Sept. 15, 1956, at Sacred Heart, Fillmore.

Mel served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 in Korea.

He worked for the Dubuque County Conservation Department for 35 years, retiring in 1992 as park superintendent.

He was a member of American Legion Post 6, Dubuque Men's Association and St. Joseph Key West Parish and the Holy Name Society.

Mel dearly loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid baseball and Chicago Cubs fan.

Surviving are his wife, Geraldine "Geri;" a daughter, Karen (Randy) Bettcher; a son, Ken (Kathy) Anthony, all of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Lacy Bettcher, of Kansas City, Mo., Sam Bettcher, of Dubuque, Laura (Josh) Rudolph, of Desoto, Texas, and Michael Anthony, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a sister, Doris (Walt) Pitz, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers, Wilfred, Herbert, Jack, Charles, James and Merlin.
