Deacon Roger Barber was born March 13, 1932 in Gaston County, North Carolina. God called him home on Monday, March 26, 2012 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Leonard William Barber and Lillian Wright Barber.
Roger was a member of New Commandment Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. before joining Center Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina where he served on the Brotherhood, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Hymn Choir, Men's Choir and overseer of the Transportation Ministry until his health failed.
Roger was one of the first black police officers in Gastonia.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Eloise Mathis Barber of Jacksonville, FLA.; Mary Louise Phillips Barber of Gastonia, N.C.; daughter, Lorraine Barber Roberson of Antioch, TN.; three stepdaughters, Cynthia M. Smith of Tallahassee, FLA., Theresa M. Robinson (Mark) of Orlando, FLA., and Jo Ann Mathis Williams (Shawn) of Jacksonville, FLA.; two sons, James "Jimmy" R. Barber, Jr. (Bettie) of Jacksonville, FLA., and Ricky Barber (Kertrenia) of Gastonia, N.C.; sister-in-law, Doris Barber of Gastonia, N.C.; brother-in-law, Rossie Lee Connor of Gastonia, N.C.; fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Center Baptist Church, Gastonia.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be at church cemetery.
Costner Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
