John's mother died when he was quite young and he was reared by his uncle, Michael Williamson Harvey. His education began in a one-room log school near the home of his uncle. The school was located on the upper waters of Little Bluestone (a tributary of Bluestone River) near the old Pack Mill. He had applied himself well to his studies and like his father and grandfather became a teacher. He began teaching in 1875 in a school similar to the one he had attended.
