Carthage grocery store of about 1890. This store, at the northwest corner of Fifth and Main, was owned and operated at the time by David D. Kerr who lived on the west side of Main just south of Fifth street. Mr. Kerr is the man in the center left wearing a straw hat and sleeve protectors. At the right side of the picture, wearing a soft black hat cocked forward over his eyes is L. D. Hiatt, then clerking for Mr. Kerr, and who soon thereafter became owner. The identity of the man in the derby hat in front of the door, probably a customer, is not known, nor is the youth, at the left, who probably was the store's delivery man. Old time Carthage grocery stores had a display of foods out on the sidewalk. NOTE: (store once was located at southeast corner of the lake described by Mrs E O Brown in her article of 1935 of her early years (1874) in Carthage, later became the Richardson Grocery store of Paul Richardson.)

The article below was printed in the Carthage Weekly Press October 11, 1894 when he was Republican candidate for Jasper county, MO. probate judge.

There are few men better known to Jasper county than Mr. D. D. Kerr, the Republican candidate for probate judge whose picture we present herewith [photo at top right]
Mr. Kerr was born in Dearborn county, Indiana in 1834 and brought up on a farm, casting his first vote for John C. Freemont in 1856. In 1861 he enlisted in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry and served his country three years after which he returned to his native state where he remained till 1872. He then came to Jasper county, and resided in Sheridan township on his farm until 1877 when he moved to this city to reside engaging in the grocery business. His thorough honesty and pleasing manners made him hosts of friends all of whom know that he will conduct the office to which he aspires in a perfectly satisfactory manner. He has done much valuable work for the party in this county but this is the first time he has been a candidate for any office.

Birth: 8th of nine known children in Dearborn county, Indiana.

David served with Company D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry from 1861 till 1864 during Civil War. His wife applied for his pension in 1908 following his 1901 demise.

Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Kerr, reportedly came to Jasper county Missouri in 1872 and settled on a farm near Jasper in Sheridan township, where they lived about a five years. They removed from the farm to Carthage around 1877 when Mr. Kerr purchased property at the southwest corner of Fifth and Main streets and operated a grocery store there for a time. He was elected probate judge and served in that capacity for some time. His employment was also in real estate.

The family since coming to Carthage has always lived in the home at the southwest corner of Fifth and Main streets [503 south Main street]. Despite the site's value as a location for a business block, later Mrs. Kerr, like her husband, steadfastly refused to set a price on the home, declaring she intended to live there until her death.

Census: 1880, age 46 Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with wife and only child at 503 south Main a retail grocer.

Veteran Schedule: 1890, served Company D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry as a private, 1861 to 1864.

In 1892 Judge Kerr loaded family on an evening train and headed out easterly, at Cincinnati, Ohio, Sallie and daughter Edith stayed and visited friends while he went on to Washington D C for his G A R encampment.

1898: FIFTH STREET IMPROVEMENT.

Where a Thoroughfare is to be Made of a Mere Path

Fifth street from Grant to Lyon is to be made into a thoroughfare, something it has not been these many years.

Work was begun on the improvement yesterday, under the supervision of street commissioner Landrum

A new stone culvert is now being built diagonally across Fifth street at the corner of Main street. This will throw the water to the south side of the street, and the stone culvert covering along the Luke property will come up.
A surface gutter will go down instead. The city will build the stone walls of a culvert along the south side of Fifth from Main to Lyon street and Judge Kerr will cover it over with slab stones as a sidewalk along his property. The culvert will also be extended across Fifth at Lyon, thus obviating a dangerous ditch there. Later the stone culvert will be extended east from main to Grant street on the south side of Fifth, G. A. Cassil putting in the slab covering for sidewalk purposes. Then the whole street from Grant to Lyon will be graded up, and thanks to the covered culvert, the street will be very materially widened.

NOTE: The 1888 built Bartlett Block was on east side Main north from 5th and later S C Boggess,jr had his Loan company south of the corner store at about 507 south Main in the 1930's, with the Digby Beauty Shop, located at SW corner 5th & Main in the 1940/50s.
