He was a member of the Dauphin Fire Company, Secretary of the Presbyterian Church Sunday School, and Assistant Scoutmaster of the newly formed Dauphin Boy Scout troop. He died as a result of a tragic injury during his employment in building the Harrisburg Hotel.

His parents, his brothers Ernest and Walter, and his sisters Ruth Shaffer Forney and Esther Shaffer Rudy are also buried in Dauphin Cemetery.
