Thelma Louise Kouns DeLong - 1918-2007
Thelma Louise Kouns DeLong, born Jan. 7, 1918, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2007, after a long illness. She was born the seventh of 13 children to Dora McNeal Kouns and John L. Kouns in Frankfort, Ky., but was raised in Ashland, Ky. Growing up, she spent a lot of time at the local swimming pool, where she would compete in swimming and diving events. It was a passion that stayed with her throughout her life, becoming an instructor for adults wanting to learn to swim. It was at one of the swimming events at Camden Park that Ova DeLong caught one of his first glimpses of his future bride. It was after attending a church service at Old Orchard Church of Christ that they actually met. They were married on Jan. 7, 1939, in Grayson, Ky. After they moved to San Francisco, Calif., looking for employment in 1945, Thelma and her family resided in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay area. Thelma moved back to the Ashland area in 2001 and resided at Trinity Station Retirement Community until she passed away. Thelma was preceded in death by 11 of her siblings; an infant daughter, Darlene, 13 weeks old; and her husband of 49 years, Ova DeLong. She is survived in Kentucky by a brother, Clifford Kouns and his wife, Patty; a son, Gary De Long and his wife, Anne; a granddaughter, Michele Kelley and her husband, Jason; great-grandsons Grayson and Luke Kelley; granddaughter Shauna DeLong-Smith and her husband, Derek; great-granddaughters Jamie and Kaitlyn Smith; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is survived in California by a son, Larry DeLong and his wife, Adela; grandson Erik DeLong; daughter Sharon Stonehouse and husband Michael; granddaughter Kimberly Stonehouse; grandson Sean Stonehouse; son Samuel DeLong and his wife, Shirley; grandsons Jay and Marc DeLong; grandson Ian DeLong and his wife, Laura; great-granddaughter Alexis; great-grandson Ryan DeLong; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Preston Family Funeral Home, 3526 Ky. 5, Ashland. Friends may call after 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Second services will be Monday, March 26, 2007, at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma, Calif., where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Ova. "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Psalms 23:6.
