Second Lieutenant Blalock served with the 464th Bomb Squadron, 331st Bomb Group, Casper Army Air Base, Wyoming.

B-17F Flying Fortress #42-5318 departed Casper on the morning of May 30, 1943, on a training flight that took the crew to Marysville, California.

After a stop at Marysville, the bomber was to fly in a group of fifteen aircraft onward to Eugene, Oregon. However, the B-17 disappeared. It was presumed they were lost over the water of the Pacific. But the wreckage of the plane was found on August 10, 1943, fifteen miles northeast of Covelo, in Mendocino County, on Leech Lake Mountain.
