Archibald was born to William Leathan Sr. and Margaret Buchanan. William was born in Gartharnlock, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 31 January 1844. He married Margaret on 25 July 1871 at the Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. William died on 18 December 1929 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, and Margaret died on 18 May 1897 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Archibald had ten siblings. William Jr, Robert Simpson, Margaret, Janet, Agnes May, Sarah Buchanan, Robert Buchanan, George Buchanan, Walter Thatcher, and Lillie Clairessa. Alexander was the fifth born child.

Archibald married Ida Evans in Tooele, Tooele County, Utah. Ida was the daughter of William Evans and Nancy Goodwin Evans.

On 7 September 1918, Alexander registered for the World War I Draft at Tooele, Tooele County, Utah. His permanent home address was listed as Ophir, Tooele County, Idaho. He was 36 years old, and he listed his current occupation as being a blacksmith employed by William Leatham. His nearest relative was Mrs. Ida Leatham of Ophir, Utah. He was described as being of tall height and medium build with gray eyes and dark hair. No physical deformities were listed.
