Johann Jonsson Sjölin left Sweden with his wife and two youngest children on Oct 10, 1884, with a destination of "Clay Center, USA." In 1884, he and his wife and those children were enumerated in the household of Johann's brother, Andrew Jonsson Printz, in Garfield Township, Clay County, Kansas. Johann's name was John Sholin in that censuses.

He died about 1881, probably in or around Garfield Township.

In Sweden, he was born Johann Jonsson. He acquired the surname, Sjölin, as a "soldier name," when he joined the Swedish army. He elected to keep that name, as did his children in America, eventually changing that name to "Sholin."
