James attended Tecumseh Public Schools and schools in Texas; Riverside Community College in California; Cal State University, Fullerton, and Cal State University, Long Beach, Calif. He married his wife in December 1943.

He was reared in the Tecumseh/Macomb area. In 1940, he joined the Civil Conservation Corps and was stationed in Colorado.

In 1941, he joined the United States Navy, serving on several ships as radio man and petty officer 1st class. He served on the aircraft carrier Phletus Bay and the USS Platte, which was in several battles in the South Pacific. He served in the Navy for eight years. In 1960, he moved to California, where he was employed by Hughes Aircraft Ground Systems at Fullerton.

He attended Arlington Church of God and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sherman W. Alexander; and a sister, Mary Corena Alexander.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two sons, three brothers, five sisters, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services were 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Alexander Family Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Cooper Funeral Chapel.
