Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Having graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1848, he taught school and worked as a merchant in Amherst County before the Civil War. In 1861 he helped form the Southern Rights Guards and became a Captain in the 19th Virginia Infantry Regiment later in the year. Promoted to Major and then to Lieutenant Colonel in 1862, he was wounded at Gaines Mill in 1862. Recovering in time to rejoin his regiment before Gettysburg, he was killed on the field by a shell fragment during the Union bombardment which preceded Pickett's charge.
