He graduated from The Pennsylvania Schoolship Annapolis in 1935. In WWII, he served with the Army Transport Service as Master of the SS General Kilpatrick, SS Piermonte, and the SS Westerly Victory. After the war Ritter returned to the Philadelphia Waterfront to continue his maritime career with freighters. He retired in 1979 as Manager of the Stevadoring and Terminals Division of Independent Pier Company. He was a founding member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Havertown.
