Emma "Avery" (Smith) Toler was a daughter belonging to Andrew Jackson "Jack" Smith and Emma Margaret (Johnson) Smith; wife to Arthur Gordon Toler; mother to Rev William "Willie" Arthur Jackson Toler, Alice Emma (Toler) Morton, Eugene Columbus Toler and Fred Joseph Toler.

Emma Avery (Smith) Toler, along with her father and two sisters; Vadis Elizabeth (Smith) Rider, at the age of 16 and Corrine Olivia Smith, just shy of her 20th birthday, was a victim of the influenza/pneumonia epidemic of the 1920's and passed at the young age of 25, leaving behind 4 children ranging from 3 months to 5 years of age.
