Colonel Walter W. Hodge, missing in April 1949 during an Air Force Flight over Mt. Hood in Oregon. Later determined to be deceased upon impact, Hodge and two other victims went missing until the snow-covered wreckage was finally discovered and the bodies recovered in August, 1949.

This memorial plaque is located in the climbing registration booth inside Timberline Day Lodge on Mount Hood, Oregon. (45.330607N 121.709584W)

Colonel Walter William Hodge and two others went missing in April, 1949 when their Air Force plane disappeared over Mt. Hood in Oregon. In August, 1949, the wreckage was discovered and the bodies were recovered.

Red dot in photo marks the location of the Air Foce B-26 Bomber that wrecked here on April 21, 1949. Aboard were Master Sgt Herman E. Sluga, Colonel William Hodge and Colonel Archibald Smith. The plane disappeared on a flight from Hamilton Field, Calif., to Portland. The bodies of all three victims were recovered in August 1949 when the snow-covered wreckage was finally revealed. A large piece of the propeller remains on top of the cliffs, and more debris can be seen in the rocks at the base.
