Roy "Buzz" Frank Ahrens Jr., 66, of Walker, Minn., passed away peacefully Monday, March 26, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held March 31 at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker with Pastor Mark Olson officiating. Visitation will be March 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hope, with a prayer service at 8. Interment will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.
Buzz was born May 23, 1945, in Crystal, Minn., to Roy and Mavis (Michelson) Ahrens. He graduated from Robbinsdale High School, and then attended Dunwoody for one year prior to his employment with Satellite Industries.
Spending summers at the cabin on Uran Bay of Leech Lake led to his desire to leave the "city life" and move north to Walker. In 1972 he became owner and operator of Buzz's Place, a full-service gas station located near the Y. It was at the gas station that Buzz met Carol, the love of his life, and they were married in 1975.
Buzz's Place eventually became Pine Ridge Gas and Groceries, and Buzz and Carol maintained the full service station, working together as a team until it was sold in the mid-1980s.
In 1974, along with the gas station, Buzz added propane cylinders to his business mix, and his propane career began. In 1986 Buzz began his employment with Gas Service and worked there until the present. He currently managed the Walker office as well as the Merrifield and Park Rapids locations.
Buzz was active in many aspects of the propane industry in Minnesota. He was a member and past president of the Minnesota Propane Association, a member of the PERC Association, a past member of the Dairyland Co-op Board, and currently served as Turtle Lake Township supervisor.
In January 2012 he received the G.F. Bursinger Award, which honored Buzz's business performance in leadership and service to the propane industry. His family was privileged to be there for the award, which created a lasting memory of significance for them.
Buzz was a hard working man of honest character who lived his life demonstrating that family was his priority. He was authentic, selfless, always available, and a good provider and role model. Buzz never answered the knock at his door sitting down. He knew how to listen well and always had a positive attitude. He was known as the "fun grandpa" and always had the energy to play basketball, go boating, tubing and give golf cart rides. Buzz was the "world's best" when it came time to barbeque and was famous for his "grandkid malts."
Carol remained the love of his life, and he was always diligent in helping her plant her garden. He also loved to golf and was an awesome water-skier. Buzz's place in the family circle and in the wider community circle will be deeply missed.
Buzz is survived by his wife Carol; mother Mavis Ahrens Johnson; daughters Stacey (Bill) Drury, Corky (Chuck) Trosen, Sherry Heuton and Rachel Ahrens; grandchildren Tim (Erica), Karly and Taylor Drury, Josh and Jordan Trosen, and MaKena and Hayden Huewe; "grand-dog" Tommy; sisters Lana Dahl, Lynnda (Mike) VanSteenwyk, Lynette (Hubert) Hubin and LaVonne (Tom) Blackwelder; brother Rick Ahrens; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Roy F. Ahrens; and grandson Matthew Trosen.
