James V. Cavender, Jr. served his country in World War II in the European theater as a 1st Lieutenant and pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. After his wartime service, Jim married Joyce Lee High of San Antonio in 1945. They were married until her death in 2000. Jim earned a BS in Chemistry from Texas A&M University and entered a long career as a research chemist with Monsanto Co. in St. Louis, Missouri and then in Texas City, Texas. He retired in 1985 after 37 years. Jim had been a resident of Texas City for many years and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
