Enlisted from August 1864 to June 1865, in the 20th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery. Enlisted 2nd Infantry from Sept. 30, 1865 to Sept. 30, 1868. Transferred 1st Cavalry in July 5, 1871. Discharge on Oct. 19, 1871.
Enlisted 7th Cavalry Jan. 18, 1872 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Lt. Myles Moylan. Gray eyes, black hair, florid complexion, 5' 10 1/2" tall. Joined regiment in Unionville, SC on Feb. 5, 1872. Black Hills Expedition 1874.
Battle of the Little Big Horn June 25-26, 1876. Kimm and four other troopers from E Troop were protecting their pack train and ended up in the fight on Reno Hill. Helped to bury Custer and his fellow troopers on Last Stand Hill. Discharged Fort Lincoln Jan. 18, 1877 as private of good character. Moved back to New York & New Jersey, married and worked as a book binder. Died at the Mountain Branch Soldiers Home in Johnson City, TN. Kimm was also known as John O. Kimm and John Q. Kimm.
