John Jarvis Martin was the son of Joseph Martin and Stacy Sprinkle. He had six siblings: Elizabeth Ann, Fanny C., Jonathan, Isaac Henry, Louisa and James. He married Margaret Elizabeth Doub on July 16, 1874 in Old Town, Forsyth County, North Carolina.
Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Indiana, near Terra Haute. They had two children there, Frank and Stacy. Both died in infancy and are buried there.
They then moved to Butler County, Kansas. Their next child, William Wesley, was born in a log cabin just across the river from what was later called Bodarc, Kansas. John bought an 80 acre farm about two miles west and north of Bodarc and their next two children, Cornelia Anetta - called Nelia and Joseph Banner were born there.
They had sold that place and were planning to go to western Kansas but "Joe's" birth delayed them. In the fall, they went ahead with the move but they were held up by a big snow storm at Mullinville, Kansas. Margaret and the children stayed in a hotel while John stayed with the team and covered wagon in a tent. Cattle were drifting with the storm so it was very dangerous to be out. They settled in Stanton County, Kansas, near Syracuse. He was appointed the first sheriff of Stanton County by Governor J.A. Martin on June 17, 1887. He only held the post briefly until elections were held. They were only able to raise poor crops in southwest Kansas so they came back to Butler County in 1889.
Their son, John Isaac was born in 1890. Their last child, Charlie was born January 21, 1892. Margaret would not recover from the birth and died just weeks later. A "Mrs. Ferguson" was hired to take care of Charlie. The family moved to Sedalia, Missouri to be near John's sister. The baby was brought out to them in August 1892 but he died just a month later. I do not know where he is buried.
They did not stay long in Missouri. They ended up coming back to the same house that they had left in 1892. His daughter, Nelia was married in 1904 so John and his son, Joe, "batched" it until 1907 when John went back to his home in North Carolina and married an 18 year old girl, Stella Reece.
