Confederate Army Officer. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1858 and was teaching at the Hampton Military Academy when the Civil War began in 1861. He entered service as a Lieutenant and was promoted to Captain in the Jackson Artillery in 1862. During Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign in 1862, he was wounded and captured. Following his release in 1863, he was appointed acting commandant of Virginia Military Institute cadets. He was appointed Major in command of his own artillery battalion in 1864. Having been wounded during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, he was again wounded and lost a leg at Sailor's Creek. Following the war, he was an engineer with the Dover Coal and Iron Company from 1865 to 1865 and served on the faculty of VMI from 1868 to 1873. He served as City Engineer of Richmond from 1873 until his death in 1907, and was responsible for the design and construction of Byrd Park.
